The ‘Higher Self’ Journaling Method That Unlocked My Purpose

For years, I wandered through life collecting accomplishments like souvenirs—impressive on display, but empty of meaning. I had the career, the relationships, the experiences that were supposed to feel fulfilling. And yet, each morning I woke to that same quiet ache: Is this really all there is?

Then, during a particularly raw season of soul-searching, I stumbled upon a journaling technique that changed everything. I now call it Higher Self Journaling. It helped me hear the inner wisdom that had been whispering to me all along—and finally, I found clarity around my deeper purpose.

What Is Higher Self Journaling?

Unlike regular journaling, this practice invites you to write from the perspective of your highest, wisest self—the part of you that lives beyond fear, ego, and conditioning. You don’t need to “fake it till you make it.” This is about tuning in to the knowing that’s already inside you, waiting for space to speak.

This isn’t fantasy—it’s a grounded, repeatable practice of connecting with the part of you that always sees the big picture.

My Simple Process for Connecting With My Higher Self

Here’s the method I use:

  • Create sacred space
Light a candle. Take three deep breaths. I let my body know: this is sacred time.

  • Set the invitation
At the top of my journal, I write: “My Highest Self, what guidance do you have for me today?”

  • Shift perspectives
I close my eyes and visualize the radiant, calm, all-knowing version of myself. I imagine stepping fully into that energy.

  • Write without filtering
Then I just let the words pour out. I don’t judge them or overthink—I allow whatever comes to come.

  • Ask a powerful question
After receiving general guidance, I’ll often ask, “What is my unique purpose?” or “How am I meant to serve right now?” And again, I just let the answers unfold.

What I Found in the Pages

The first time I did this, I cried—not from pain, but from deep recognition. What flowed onto the page didn’t feel like ordinary thinking. It felt like truth. My Higher Self didn’t talk about job titles or grand achievements. It spoke of presence. Of creating spaces where others could feel safe to be real.

Even more powerfully, it gave me action steps—projects to begin, people to release, practices to deepen. That quiet ache of emptiness? It was replaced by certainty.

How It Changed My Life

Within weeks, I made some of the most honest decisions I’d ever made—leaving a prestigious role that no longer aligned, showing up in relationships with more truth and tenderness, and creating work that feels like devotion rather than duty.

The question stopped being “What should I do with my life?” and became “How can I serve my truth today?”

Start Your Own Practice

If this resonates, try it for yourself. You don’t need anything fancy—just a quiet space, a few deep breaths, and your willingness to listen.

Ask your Higher Self questions like:

  • What am I not seeing about my current situation?

  • What is the next aligned step I’m ready to take?

  • How can I feel more connected to my true path today?

This practice is now part of my sacred rhythm. It continues to reveal truth—not because I’m seeking perfection, but because I’m learning to trust the wisdom that lives within.
